The Science of Biomechanics

Each edition of the ISB 2017 e-news will feature experts who live and work in the Pacific and Oceania regions and explore how their applications of biomechanics have impacted our everyday lives.

The Jaws of Life

Dr Ackland, pictured right, is a Senior Lecturer of Biomechanical Engineering in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Melbourne.

Richard Stratton, 32, was unable to open his mouth fully and was suffering increasing pain when moving his jaw or chewing, which was believed to stem from a childhood injury that might have prevented the jaw from growing properly. The solution was to implant a prosthetic jaw and include the missing left condyle, which is the joint that joins the bone to the skull.

Read how a mechanical engineer and a surgeon used cutting edge 3D printing technology to create a working body part that will improve the quality of life for thousands. See full article.

International Society of Biomechanics Membership

In the lead up to ISB2017 we will be announcing the Awards and Grants available to members of the ISB, APAB and ANZSB. Members of the International Society of Biomechanics will be familiar with the award such as the Promising Scientist Award and David Winter Young Investigator Award. To be eligible for these opportunities you must be a member of the Society.

Society members derive many rewards and benefits from their membership including a reduction in the ISB2017 registration fees.

Where are we next?

ISB 2017 ambassadors are on the move. The ISB 2017 Committee will be attending a number of significant related events - we would love to hear your thoughts what you would like to see at the Congress - this is the perfect opportunity to help us plan.

We will be in Chicago, Illinois, at XXI Congress of the International Society of Electrophysiology and Kinesiology - Bridges to Innovation, in July 5th-8th, 2016.

The Congress will bring together a multidisciplinary cross section of delegates from basic scientists to practicing clinicians specialising in human movement and the neuromuscular system.

The Aussie crew will be hosting a networking event after the ISB sponsored session and ISB sponsored keynote presentation by Prof Scott Delp, Friday 8th July - time is 1.30pm – 2.30pm.

Heading cross country to the 40th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Biomechanics, in Raleigh, North CarolinaBuilding a dynamic future on the strength of our past.

Please visit us at our booth in the ASB40 exhibition, we will also be hosting networking drinks for those who do come and collect a koala.
